To take this tour requires a bit of effort on your part – the area is remote, the roads are mainly single track and you’ll really get the sense that you are miles away from anywhere. But as with everything in life - you put the effort in and the rewards are tremendous.
This is a must see location on any trip to Scotland – okay it is a fair old trek from the central belt and it is a bit off the beaten track but you will be so glad to have made the journey. All around this north-western coastline is a magical journey of discovery – stunning seascapes, rugged mountain peaks, miles and miles of quiet unspoilt coastline and a whole host of interesting places to visit, things to do and see.
Surprisingly the climate is kinder here too as the Gulf Stream brings warm currents to these coastal waters from far away lands. You’ll find palm trees growing and a whole host of tropical plants and species can be found at Inverewe Gardens.
Make sure you take the scenic route via Plockton (Film set for TV show Hamish Macbeth near Kyle of Lochalsh) and Applecross (near Ardarroch) and be prepared for a trip of your life as you head up and over the high mountain pass.
The Wester Ross Region is a great area for walking, wildlife spotting, cruising or simply just relaxing, taking it easy and letting the world pass you by. Pick up the A832 at Achnasheen and follow the road to Gairloch, Poolewe and Aultbea. From here you can take the A835 and head north for Ullapool (approx 1hr 20mins) or south for Inverness (approx 1hr 40mins.)
