The west coast of Scotland is a magical land - stunning seascapes, lochs, mountains and glens all waiting to be discovered. The area is sparsely populated and many pretty little villages and hamlets are dotted around the area. The best way to get the most out of the west coast is to make the trip from Oban to Fort William via the Isle of Mull and the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Leave the busy harbour of Oban behind and head for a slower, more tranquil pace enjoyed on one of Scotland's largest islands. Mull is a truly magical place to visit and has something for everyone - walking, wildlife, beauty spots and a rich heritage to enjoy.
The capital, Tobermory is a must visit and has a distillery, colourful buildings and a fantastic lively atmosphere all set within stunning scenery. The village offers a good selection of bars and restaurants as well as comfortable places to stay.
The holy island of Iona is somewhere you’ll definitely want to visit, as it is the birthplace of Christianity and the burial place of 60 kings. The last leader of the Labour party, John Smith, is also buried here. Many tour boats will take you on a day trip to Iona and then on to Staffa – a fantastic trip that will allow you to see Fingals Cave and understand why Mendelossohn was inspired to write the Hebridean Overture.
A short ferry trip from Fishnish on Mull and you arrive in Morvern. A stunning area that surrounds the most westerly point on the British mainland, here the sun sets later, the pace is easier and this unspoilt land is definitely well worth getting to know. This is a great place for walking, wildlife watching, history and heritage, simply just relaxing as well as many fun things to do.
You can do a circular tour of Ardnamurchan and head back to Mull by following the B8007 to Kilchoan (1hr 20 mins) or follow the A861 west and head for Fort William (2hrs 10 mins.) Alternatively take the A861 north and head for Mallaig (1hr 45 mins) and onwards to the Isle of Skye.
