Travelling from Inverness to Ullapool is relaxing and romantic. This route does not focus on visitor attractions, instead it is one of the opportunities to sit back and enjoy what the Northern Highlands has to offer.
As you leave Inverness you will enter the region of the Munros. The Munros are a collection of Scotland's highest mountains - 284 in total and the range is named after the man who first catalogued them - Sir Hugh Munro. The first Munro you will see as you leave Inverness is Ben Wyvis (meaning big green slope) and this is one of the most northern mountains in the Munros range. As you drive further east you will pass Loch Glascarnoch and then the westerly mountains of the Munros - Beinn Dearg (meaning red hill) and An Teallach (meaning Pinnacle of the Green Hollow.) With so much beauty on route it provides the perfect opportunity to take your walking boots and explore some of this scenery on foot. There are various walks to suit all fitness abilities.
This route is not only used by motor vehicles - deer are frequent road users as well. Along the road you will see frequent "deer warning signs" and there are numerous deer reflectors to minimise the number of road accidents. With so many cautions the chances of you seeing deer grazing by the side of the road are very high, however do remember to drive with care.
